The Very Hungry Caterpillar

To kick off our Butterfly Week
We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar
By Eric Carle
A Classic!

I have read this book many a time to Miss S.
She loves it!
So we decided to take it one step further.
We decided to make a puppet to go along with the book.

We cut up a egg carton.
And we painted it.

Instead of using a paintbrush,
We used a cut up sponge and clothes pin.
It was fun to use something different to paint with
We kinda like doing that.

I extended the activity by pulling out my stencils,
so she paint with those too.

We also sang the song "Butterfly"
It goes through the life cycle of a butterfly,
Using to tune of up on the house top. (So it's catchy.)

For our Butterfly theme we leared a lot about Eric Carle. First we made Our Own Eric Carle Butterflies, we also made A Very Hungary Caterpillar book, and lastly we made a butterfly box to fly around in,
Here are the Butterfly Books we are Reading This Week:
Fly Monarch, Fly!
By NancyWallace

This is a really in depth book about the
Life Cycle of a Butterfly
That is really on a child's level.

Yeah for Butterfly Week!

  2. Andrea, you should also post where you ordered the catapillars to raise butterflies! That would be a fun educational project too.

  4. I'm doing the caterpillars with my 2nd grade class (more in depth) and my daughter's preschool. We ordered the caterpillars from insectlore.com:

Also, you could do an art project creating the butterfly body out of construction paper and then two handprints on each side of the body to form the wings.

Also, here's a fun idea to show the life cycle of the caterpillars using different pastas:

  8. I love it when beautiful ideas bounce out of books, lay themselves in front of you and say, Let's play/explore/make/think/do! It's always magic, isn't it?

All the things you did look lovely, and your girl looks so happy, so content and absorbed. What a sweet post—thank you :)
